Should your student take the SAT or ACT?

Broadly speaking, the SAT includes three categories and the ACT contains four categories along with an optional writing test. If a candidate is a strong math student, ACT may be a better option because the ACT contains higher level math than that found on the SAT, including Algebra II and trigonometry questions. On the other hand, the SAT is more challenging with regard to vocabulary, so an avid reader may prefer the SAT. Also, if a student’s data interpretation skills are weak, they may opt away from the ACT, as the science section heavily tests those skills. Whereas the SAT requires a written essay, the essay is optional on the ACT, although it is generally recommended that students opt to write the essay.
